In Wellesley, a town in Massachusetts, people organized a surprise birthday party for Herlda Senhouse, the oldest town resident who turned 112 on Tuesday.

Friends and family gathered around Ms. Senhouse at the senior living center and sang “Happy Birthday to you”.

Ms. Senhouse, the youngest of nine siblings, grew up in Piedmont, West Virginia, where her parents died by the time she turned six.

In 1931, she moved to Woburn to live with an aunt and became the first person in her family to graduate high school.

According to ‘The Bradford’, Wellesley High School’s student news publication, Ms. Senhouse was one of only two Black students in Woburn High School. Despite wanting to become a nurse, Ms. Senhouse became a domestic worker, working as a cook, cleaner, and caretaker for children.

She has traveled to several countries in her life, including Italy, Spain, Turkey, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados, Morocco, South Africa, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, and West Virginia. WCVB reported that Ms. Senhouse is the second-oldest person living in Massachusetts.
