5 Million Bees Accidentally Released on Canadian Highway Causes Chaos.
Burlington, Ontario: An unexpected and extraordinary incident unfolded on a Canadian highway as approximately 5 million bees were inadvertently set loose from wooden boxes that tumbled off a truck.
The incident triggered a response from local beekeepers and law enforcement to mitigate the situation and ensure public safety.
In the early hours of Wednesday at around 6:15 AM, the Halton Regional Police received reports of wooden crates containing bees falling off a truck onto a road in Burlington, Ontario.
Constable Ryan Anderson explained that the exact cause of the accident remained uncertain, stating, “We’re not sure how or what exactly took place, but at some point, the boxes containing bees or beehives slid off the trailer and spilled all over the road.”
Authorities swiftly moved to manage the situation, urging passing vehicles to close windows and pedestrians to avoid the area while the beekeepers and police worked to address the unexpected bee swarming.
The police department emphasized public safety, stating, “Passing vehicles and residents are advised to close windows, and pedestrians should avoid the area until clear.”
According to reports, the crates of bees wreaked havoc as they scattered across the roadway. However, local beekeepers soon arrived at the scene to assist in the cleanup efforts. The police expressed gratitude for the beekeepers’ contribution, acknowledging that their expertise was pivotal in managing the situation.
While the incident was resolved by early afternoon, authorities advised drivers and residents to exercise caution and keep windows closed as a preventive measure. Responding to concerns, an expert beekeeper shared insights into the situation, clarifying that although the number of bees might sound overwhelming, a typical colony could comprise around 80,000 bees.
The beekeeper highlighted that honey bees are generally gentle creatures and do not disturb humans unless provoked. He urged individuals to maintain a safe distance and stressed that the incident was rare, reinforcing the notion that understanding and cooperation are essential when dealing with bees.
