As the world mourns the passing of the Queen of England, here are some interesting facts about the Late Queen Elizabeth.
[1]. The late Queen Elizabeth married her third cousin Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in 1947, eight years after the couple got acquainted with each other in 1939 when 13-year-old Elizabeth made a trip with her parents and sister to Britannia Royal Naval College, where Philip, 18, was a cadet.
They were married for 73 years before the husband died last year in April, a few weeks shy of his 100th birthday. The queen is survived by her four children Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
[2]. When Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1926, she was neither expected, nor the first or second in succession line to the throne. Her father, King George VI, was the second son in his family and only became monarch after his brother King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 in order to marry divorced American Wallace Simpson. This change in royal order left then 10-year-old Elizabeth as heir presumptive.
[3]. She was in Kenya when her father died. Queen Elizabeth II was in Kenya with her husband Prince Philip when her father King George VI died in 1952. Philip broke the news of King George VI’s death to his wife while they were alone during a trip to Kenya.One year after her father’s death in 1952, Elizabeth was crowned queen at age 25 and spent nearly three-quarters of her life on the throne.
[4]. Elizabeth was born in 1926 in Mayfair, London. A part of the British royal family on her father’s side and another part from an aristocratic Scottish family on her mother’s side. At the time of her birth, Elizabeth’s paternal grandfather, King George V, was on the throne and she was third in the line of succession.
[5]. Elizabeth was nicknamed by her family “Lilibet”, which was what the queen initially called herself as a child when she couldn’t pronounce her name “Elizabeth”.
[6]. She had one sister. Her only sister, Princess Margaret, was born in 1930, and the two remained close until Margaret’s death in 2002.

Although she was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) — and the eldest granddaughter of King George V, Queen Elizabeth II was not born in a palace, she was instead born in a townhouse in London that belonged to her Scottish maternal grandparents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore on 21 April 1926.
[8]. She was homeschooled. Queen Elizabeth II was educated at home alongside her only sibling Princess Margaret who was born in 1930. The two princesses were educated under the supervision of their mother and their governess, Marion Crawford. They were taught lessons concentrated on history, language, literature, and music.
[9]. Elizabeth became the longest-serving head of state in the world at the time of her death, as well as the oldest British monarch and the ruler with the longest reign in the country’s history. During her reign, 15 British prime ministers were in office, beginning with Sir Winston Churchill’s second term in office to date. She also met 13 U.S. presidents, each one since President Harry Truman with the exception of President Lyndon B. Johnson.
