American couple to go on trial for child torture in Uganda.
In a disturbing case of child trafficking and torture, an American couple who traveled to Uganda in 2017 to adopt children will face trial in the East African country.
The couple, Mackenzie and Nicholas Spencer have been accused of torturing and trafficking a 10-year-old boy under their care. According to BBC, the couple has also been charged with entering Uganda without work permits.
The Spencers were arrested in December 2022 and have been on remand for three months. The Director of Public Prosecution plans to provide video evidence taken by a housemaid who was employed by the couple. The Spencers are alleged to have tortured the minor while they were staying in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.
The video evidence allegedly shows the 10-year-old being left alone in a cold, tiled room. The minor was given frozen food to eat and was put under surveillance for 24 hours. He was also made to sit naked in one position.
The Spencers will answer the charges before the country’s international crimes division of the High Court. It is unclear what penalties they could face if found guilty of the charges against them.
This case highlights the issue of child trafficking and the need for authorities to investigate and prosecute those who engage in such heinous acts. It also raises questions about the adoption process and the need for greater oversight to prevent the abuse and exploitation of vulnerable children.
