ASUU Strike: Showdown In Court As FG Sues ASUU

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities who are Senior Advocates of Nigeria and Professors of Law among others will be defending the union as the case instituted by the Federal Government at the National Industrial Court comes up for hearing on Monday (today).

Recall that the Federal Government had dragged the union before the National Industrial Court over its lingering ongoing strike which started on February 14, 2022.

ASUU had embarked on strike since February 15 to protest the alleged decay of infrastructure at the various institutions, the proliferation of universities as well as neglect of the welfare of its members.

After efforts to end the strike failed, the government through the Ministry of Labour’s Trade Dispute Department filed a case before the Industrial Arbitration Court in Abuja where the hearing on the case would commence today.

Defending the position of the Buhari-led Federal Government on the dispute, Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, disclosed during a meeting of Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities, held at the NUC’s office, that the federal government had said that it would not sign any other agreement it cannot implement.

The minister said the government had offered the union a 23.5 percent salary increase,

“for all categories of the workforce in federal universities, except for the professorial cadre which will enjoy a 35 per cent upward review.  He said the government had also promised that N150 billion “shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget as funds for the revitalisation of federal universities, to be disbursed to the Institutions in the First Quarter of the year.”

The University unions rejected the offer, saying it is “inadequate to meet their respective demands needed to tackle the challenges confronting the university system.”

However, in an interview with newsmen on Sunday, a member of ASUU’s National Executive Council, who claimed anonymity said the union would utilize the talents of its members who are senior lawyers.

Also speaking with newsmen, the union’s National Vice-President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, confirmed that members of the Union would be in court for the hearing.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, asked the court to give the case an accelerated hearing to bring the strike to an end speedily.
