On Thursday, Benjamin Netanyahu was inaugurated as Israel’s prime minister after the country’s parliament approved the most right-wing government in its history.

The government received the support of 63 out of 120 deputies in the vote. Prior to his inauguration, Netanyahu had formed the government by entering into agreements with ultra-Orthodox and far-right parties.

The government includes Netanyahu’s Likud party members and politicians from the far right of the political spectrum, including Itamar Ben Gvir, who has been convicted of supporting terrorism and inciting anti-Arab racism and will now serve as national security minister.

Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionism party, has been appointed finance minister and will also have the power to appoint the head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, which handles border crossings and permits for Palestinians.

Aryeh Deri, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Sephardi party Shas, will serve as interior minister and minister of health.

The incoming government has raised concerns among retired Israeli ambassadors and foreign ministry officials, who have expressed “profound concern at the serious damage to Israel’s foreign relations, its international standing and its core interests abroad” in a letter to Netanyahu.
