Breaking News: ASUU UNIJOS Branch Asks Lecturers To Sit At Home Over Non-Payment Of Full Salary

The University of Jos branch of ASUU has resolved that members of the teaching staff of the university will stay at home with effect from today, Friday as a result of the payment of a prorated October salary representing 17 days from October 14, 2022, when the eight-month strike was called off.

Recall that ASUU’s National Executive Council held a meeting on October 14, 2022, and suspended the eight-month-long strike stating that ASUU is a law-abiding union. On that premise, ASUU said it will respect the ruling of the National Industrial Court which ordered the union to resume work.

In a press statement released today, ASUU chairman University of Jos chapter, Associate Professor Lazarus Maigoro stated that part of the agreement reached with the leadership of the House of Representatives was that 50% of the backlog of salary arrears would be paid in the first tranch.

“One of the issues agreed at the meeting was that 50% of the backlog of with months arrears of our withheld salaries will be paid to our members immediately but as at the time of writing this press release, only 17 days prorated October salary was paid to our members by the office of the Accountant General of the Federation,” Lazarus stated.

“Having stayed for about nine months running now, our members in the University of Jos considered this an insult to them by the Accountant-General of The Federation.”

Also taking a shot at the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, the ASUU Chairman accused the minister of taking the issue of Labour conflict conciliation personally.

“We wonder why Ngige is only keen about withholding the salaries of ASUU members because staff of some Agricultural Research institutes have been on strike for almost a year but they have been receiving their salaries regularly. Is this policy only for ASUU members?”, Professor Maigoro queried.

He also said the union is aware that Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment wrote a memo to the Accountant-General of The Federations directing him to pay lecturers wages calculated from the day they suspended the strike which is against laid down policy.

In view of the underpayment and breach of the agreement between the union and the Federal Government, ASUU has decided that though they are not on strike, they will stay at home indefinitely.

“In view of the bottleneck placed by Ngige towards paying our members the backlog of our salaries, the congress of ASUU University of Jos met today, 4th November 2022, and resolved to stay at home, though not on strike until the backlog of the withheld salaries is paid.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our members are back to work, willing and ready to work but are unable to work. Based on the revised academic calendar for the 2020/2021 session approved by the senate of the university, lectures should have started already but the challenge of lack of payment of salaries has constrained our members from going to the classroom to teach.

“What this implies is that the students who have resumed already will have to wait indefinitely while we wait for our withheld salaries to be paid to us, unfortunately.”
