ChatGPT Creator Releases New Tool To Detect AI-Generated Text

OpenAI, the creators of the ChatGPT bot, made headlines on Tuesday with the release of a tool designed to detect if written works were authored by artificial intelligence.

The software, which can mimic human writing, has caused controversy in schools and universities worldwide due to concerns that it may be used to help students cheat on exams and assignments.

In a blog post, OpenAI stated that the detection tool has been trained to recognize text written by both humans and AI from various providers.

Despite its impressive ability to respond to simple prompts with large amounts of text generated from data found on the internet, the tool is not without limitations.

OpenAI warned that the tool may not be reliable for texts containing fewer than 1,000 characters and that it can sometimes make mistakes.

“While it is impossible to reliably detect all AI-written text, we believe good classifiers can inform mitigations for false claims that AI-generated text was written by a human,” OpenAI said in the post.

“For example, running automated misinformation campaigns, using AI tools for academic dishonesty, and positioning an AI chatbot as a human.”

OpenAI acknowledges the importance of discussing the limits and impacts of AI-generated text classifiers in the classroom and is working with educators in the US to better understand their experiences and to learn about ChatGPT’s capabilities and limitations.

“We recognize that identifying AI-written text has been an important point of discussion among educators, and equally important is recognizing the limits and impacts of AI-generated text classifiers in the classroom,” OpenAI said in the post.

“We are engaging with educators in the US to learn what they are seeing in their classrooms and to discuss ChatGPT’s capabilities and limitations.”

Some jurisdictions, such as New York, have already prohibited the use of ChatGPT in schools.

French universities have banned students from using ChatGPT for assignments, following the news that it had passed exams at a US law school. Education facilities have taken quick action to ban the use of AI tool, even though it still makes factual errors.

Australian universities have also expressed their intentions to change exam formats to ban AI tools and view them as cheating. OpenAI recommends using the text classifier tool only for English text as it performs poorly in other languages.
