On January 15, 2023, Yeti Airlines flight 9N ANC, an ATR 72-500 twin-engine turboprop aircraft, crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, minutes before its scheduled landing.

The flight was en route from Kathmandu to Pokhara with a total of 68 passengers and four crew members on board. Unfortunately, the crash resulted in the loss of 72 lives, with 68 bodies recovered so far from the crash site.

The Nepal Army has handed over the black box and flight data recorder of the aircraft to Civil Aviation Authority officials. The black box, also known as the flight data recorder, records all flight information through a special algorithm, which will be used to investigate the cause of the crash.

Search and rescue operations at the crash site resumed on Monday morning.

Assistant Chief District Officer of Kaski, Nepal, Anil Kumar Shahi, stated that 63 bodies had been recovered and shifted to a hospital as of Sunday evening, with an additional 6 bodies recovered on Monday. Three more bodies are still missing and search efforts are ongoing to retrieve them.

“Bodies of passengers, whose identities have been established, have been sent for post-mortem. A group of experts also has arrived at the spot. The bodies will be handed over to the families here but those of the crew members, foreigners and the ones yet to be identified will be sent to Kathmandu this evening,”

In response to the tragic event, Yeti Airlines announced that all regular flights for January 16, 2023, have been canceled as a mark of mourning for the passengers who lost their lives in the crash. The airline expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

“In mourning for the passengers who lost their lives in the accident of Yeti Airlines 9N ANC ATR 72 500, we would like to inform you that all regular flights for January 16, 2023, have been canceled.”
