On Monday, tech entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, announced via Twitter that he would be auctioning off a neon Twitter bird sign that was previously displayed in the company’s headquarters.

The sign, which measures approximately 4 feet by 3 feet, features the iconic blue bird logo of the social media platform and was reportedly used as a backdrop for photo shoots and meetings.

The auction, which was held on the website Charitybuzz, saw bids reach as high as $35,000 before ultimately being sold to an unnamed buyer. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the nonprofit organization, Mars Generation, which aims to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders in the field of space exploration.

In addition to the neon sign, Musk also announced that he would be selling a variety of other Twitter-themed items, including office furniture and memorabilia, with all proceeds also going towards the Mars Generation.

Other items of interest include a plain Twitter bird statue, which has received bids of over $30,000, and a planter sculpture of the “@” symbol. Additionally, professional kitchen equipment, such as a commercial dehydrator, fryer, and a La Marzocco Strada semi-automatic espresso machine, are also being sold for thousands of dollars.

The auction, which is set to close on Wednesday, is a way for Musk to call attention to the perceived excesses of Twitter’s previous administration and to signal that cost-cutting is a top priority for the company. However, the funds raised from the auction are unlikely to make a significant dent in Twitter’s financial obligations, as the company is on the hook for about $1 billion per year in interest payments from the $44 billion acquisition by Musk.

This is not the first time Musk has used his platform to raise money for charitable causes. In the past, he has also auctioned off a private tour of SpaceX’s facilities and a seat on one of the company’s forthcoming lunar missions.

This move is seen as a way to raise funds for the non-profit organization, The Mars Generation, which aims to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders in the field of space exploration. It is also a way to clear out the office space and make way for new projects.

Twitter, which no longer has a media relations department, has not commented on the auction. In December, Musk defended his cost-cutting measures, stating that the company was in a dire financial situation and that drastic action was needed to turn things around.

Overall, the auction of the neon Twitter bird sign and other memorabilia from the social media giant is a unique and innovative way for Musk to raise funds for a cause that he is passionate about, while also allowing fans and collectors to own a piece of technology history.
