Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a severe and prolonged illness,” the Central Clinical Hospital reported.

Gorbachev facilitated the reunification of Eastern and Western Germany.

The last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, died at the age of 92 after a long illness, the Central Clinical Hospital reported.

The ex-president of the USSR turned 91 this year.

World leaders have continued to pay glowing tribute to the great Russian leader who ensured the end of the cold war without bloodshed.

Reacting to his death, US President, Biden called him “a man of remarkable vision, a rare leader,” and also said, “It was easy to understand why so many worldwide held him in such high esteem,”.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson compared his leadership style to that of Putin. While extolling Gorbachev’s exemplary leadership, he threw unflattering words at Putin and expressed admiration for Gorbachev’s part in ending the Cold War peacefully.

“In a time of Putin’s aggression in Ukraine, [Gorbachev’s] tireless commitment to opening up Soviet society remains an example to us all,” Johnson said.
