Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu has been found alive in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 4,800 people.

The Ghanaian ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashietey-Odunton, confirmed the news, saying that she had received information from the president of the Ghanaian community association in Turkey.

Atsu, 31, currently plays for Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor and was in the southern province of Hatay at the time of the quake.

Mustafa Ozat, an official from Hatayspor, previously reported that Atsu was still trapped in the rubble and attempting to escape. No further details have been released regarding his condition.

Atsu, who won his last of 60 caps for the Ghanaian national team in September 2019, spent five seasons playing for Newcastle United before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2021.

The Ghana Football Association expressed their concern and prayers for Atsu and the victims of the earthquake on their Twitter accounts.

Emergency efforts have been hampered by the freezing weather and dozens of nations have offered aid to those affected by the 7.8-magnitude quake.

The earthquake caused widespread devastation, with over 5,600 structures reduced to rubble in Turkey and dozens of collapses reported in Syria.
