Indian University Students Protest Over Leaked Nudes Of Female Students

Massive protests broke out Sunday in a Punjab private university over allegations that a female student recorded nude videos of multiple hostel inmates and leaked them to the public.

Protests had erupted on the campus when rumors circulated, alleging that multiple videos of several female students were recorded while taking their baths and leaked by a female student.

The rumor has it that the unnamed girl recorded more than 60 videos of other female students while taking their baths and began circulating them, also alleging she gave the videos to her boyfriend.

However, Chandigarh University in Punjab’s Mohali has denied the allegations, saying it was only a case of a student who recorded only herself and shared it with her boyfriend.

In a statement released by Chandigarh University, Pro-Chancellor Dr. RS Bawa said, “The rumor which is circulating through media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students… is totally false and baseless… no videos found of any student which are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which was shared by herself to her boyfriend.”

Also responding to the scandal, the police said their investigations show there was no such existence of multiple obscene videos of female students.

“So far in our investigation, we have found out that there is only one video of the accused herself. She has not recorded any other video of anyone else,” Mohali police chief Vivek Soni said, news agency ANI reported.

The girl has been arrested on charges of voyeurism and sections of the IT Act, the police added.

But the students of the university seem not to be convinced. There were claims on social media that some female students have committed suicide following the leaked nudes. The police disagree.

“One student who was taken in an ambulance was suffering from anxiety and our team is in contact with her,” Mr. Soni said.

“A man from Shimla is known to the accused girl. Only after he is caught, more details will be known. Forensic probe of her mobile phone will be conducted,” said senior police officer Gurpreet Kaur Deo.

NDTV also reports that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. “Sad to hear the incident of Chandigarh University. Our daughters are our pride. Have ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Whoever is guilty will take strict action. I appeal to all of you to avoid rumours.”

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister and chief of the Aam Aadmi Party that rules Punjab, has termed the incident “shameful” and called for patience. “In Chandigarh University, a girl has gone viral by recording objectionable videos of many girl students… We are all with you. All act with patience,” Mr. Kejriwal said in a tweet.

From the Opposition Congress, senior party leader Pawan Khera has appealed to people to not share the leaked video. “To all responsible Indians, please do not repost, forward, or share any MMS/video of the #chandigarhuniversity horror. Let us be a digitally responsible society,” he tweeted.

Despite the denials by the authorities and the Chandigarh University management, the students have continued to protest, stating they want justice.

A Twitter user, Adhunikta Shah @Adhunikta posted a video of a girl being carried into an ambulance while tweeting,

“Such a shame it would be if Chandigarh University closes this matter. 3 cases of suicide, and leaked MMS. Don’t manipulate the case. We want justice for every single girl out there.
