UK police have charged a 28-year-old man with attempted murder in connection with two separate attacks on elderly men, who were set on fire after leaving mosques.

The incidents occurred in west London on February 27 and in Birmingham on March 21.

The suspect, Mohammed Abbkr from Edgbaston in Birmingham, was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation involving counter-terrorism police and is currently in custody.

The victim of the attack in London was an 82-year-old man who suffered severe burns to his face and arms. Police said that Abbkr engaged the victim in conversation before spraying him with what is believed to be petrol and setting him alight.

In the second attack, which took place in Birmingham, Mohammed Rayaz, 70, was set on fire as he walked home from a mosque in the Edgbaston area of the city. He remains hospitalized with severe injuries.

Police are appealing for security camera footage, doorbell footage, or any other video that could help with the investigation.

The accused is set to appear at the magistrates’ court in Birmingham. The police have not disclosed any information regarding the motive for the attacks.
