Nigerians and Italians were shocked as video footage showed an Italian man beating a Nigerian, 39 to death on the street in Italy. A Nigerian immigrant identified as Alika Ogorchukwu was reported killed in broad daylight on the streets of Civitanova Marche city located in the Province of Macerata, Marche Region of Italy.
A statement released by the Nigerian Embassy in Italy confirmed the incident while condemning the killing.
“The attention of the Embassy has been drawn to the brutal murder of Alika Ogorchukwu. A 39-year-old Nigerian citizen was beaten to death by an Italian man on Friday 29th July 2022, in Civitanova Marche city, located in the province of Macerata, Marche Region of Italy.
“The incident occurred on a busy street, in front of shocked onlookers. Some of whom made videos of the attack,
with little or no attempt to prevent it.
“His Excellency, Ambassador Mfawa Omini Abam has condemned the gruesome murder and has commiserated with Mrs. Charity Oriachi, wife of the deceased, and the rest of his family.
“His Excellency has directed the provision of immediate consular assistance as appropriate. The Embassy is currently collaborating with relevant Italian authorities to ensure justice is served and to provide succor to the family of the deceased.
“Ambassador Abam wishes to enjoin members of the Nigerian community in Italy to remain calm and to refrain from taking laws into their hands.
“His Excellency wishes to assure Nigerians in Italy that citizen diplomacy remained the key thrust of his administration and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all Nigerians in Italy receive timely, efficient and professional consular services.
Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM on Saturday also reacted to the incident via their Twitter handle, “39-year-old Nigerian citizen was beaten to death by an Italian man on Friday 29th July 2022 in Civitanova Marche city, located in the Province of Macerata, Marche Region of Italy”
However, despite widely circulated reports that Italian onlookers recorded videos of the incident instead of intervening to prevent the dastardly act, there have been reactions from the Italian community.
Some Italian commentators have condemned the killing of Alika Ogorchukwu as footage of the attack has circulated widely on Italian social media and some news websites.
One of such is the comments from the head of the Italian left-wing Democratic Party, Enrico Letta. He said, “The murder of Alika Ogorchukwu is dismaying, unheard of ferocity. Widespread indifference. There can be no justification.” he tweeted on Saturday.
In the same vain, the right-wing leader Matteo Salvini said, “security has no color and…needs to return to being a right.”
Meanwhile, the Italian Police have been able to arrest the culprit. Police Investigator Matteo Luconi told the press on Italian news channel Sky TG24 that police swiftly responded when onlookers contacted the authorities, although the suspect fled the scene of the crime.
During a press conference, the city’s Chief Commissioner, Fabio Mazza revealed what played out. “The aggressor went after the victim, first hitting him with a crutch. He made him fall to the ground, then he finished, causing the death, hitting him repeatedly with his bare hands,”
Efforts to resuscitate the victim proved abortive when police arrived at the scene. The police used street cameras to track the assailant across the streets of the city and arrested and detained Claudio Giuseppe Ferlazzo, 32. Claudio was said to have lashed out and attacked the vendor, Alika when he made “insistent” requests for pocket change.
Police have commenced investigations to unravel the whole incident and bring the suspect to justice as they question witnesses and review videos of the attack.
Nigerians on social media have also shown outrage over the incident.
The victim, Alika Ogorchukwu who was married with two children resorted to street hawking after he sustained injuries from a car accident.
