North Korea Fires 2 More Missiles Into Its Pacific "Firing Range"

North Korea has launched two ballistic missiles off its east coast just two days after firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the sea off Japan’s west coast.

The projectiles were fired from multiple rocket launchers and aimed at targets 395 km and 337 km away. North Korea’s KCNA state news agency has confirmed that the multiple rocket launcher is capable of “paralyzing” an enemy airfield and is a means of a tactical nuclear weapon.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has requested an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting over the tests, which reached maximum altitudes of about 100 km and 50 km.

South Korea’s military has condemned the launches as a “grave provocation” that should stop immediately, with President Yoon Suk-yeol’s office holding a National Security Council meeting to review the tests and discuss countermeasures.

The warning from Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, that North Korea’s use of the Pacific as a “firing range” would depend on the behavior of U.S. forces could signal plans to fire more missiles further, possibly in the direction of the U.S. territory of Guam.

The United States and South Korea are set to hold simulated nuclear tabletop exercises aimed at improving operations of U.S. nuclear assets this week, as well as annual springtime Freedom Shield field training in March.

North Korea’s foreign ministry has said it will respond to the exercises with “unprecedentedly persistent, strong counteractions”.

Despite Japanese Prime Minister Kishida’s request for a new round of U.N. sanctions over the tests, prospects for this appear slim given the previous vetoes by Russia and China amid the Ukraine crisis and a Sino-U.S. feud over a Chinese balloon in American skies.

South Korea’s foreign ministry has announced sanctions on four individuals and five entities linked to North Korea’s weapons programs over the latest ICBM and missile tests, in what it called its fastest-ever such response to the North’s provocations.

North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un’s sister, has criticized some South Korean experts who questioned the reliability of the ICBMs and has stated that there is no change in North Korea’s will to make those escalating tensions pay the price for their actions.
