Saheed Abioye, a driver from Ibadan, Oyo State, known by the alias Anini, has been apprehended by the Anti-Cultism Squad of the Osun State Police Command.

The suspect was caught after a failed attempt to steal mobile phones during a church vigil in Osogbo.

Abioye, a father of one, explained during his parade at the police headquarters that he had traveled from Ibadan to Osogbo to check on his child, who was staying with a relative.

Prior to visiting his child, he decided to attend a church in the Alekuwodo area of Osun State where a vigil was taking place, with the intention of stealing phones from unsuspecting worshippers.

However, Abioye’s plan was thwarted as he fell asleep shortly after the vigil began and woke up around 3 am. By that time, the vigil had ended and people were leaving the church, so he left without stealing anything.

While passing through the Alekuwodo area, Abioye encountered a police patrol vehicle and anti-cultism operatives from the Dugbe divisional headquarters in Osogbo. They stopped and searched him but found no incriminating items except his purse and ID card. Suspecting his involvement in criminal activities, they took him back to the church to confirm his presence.

However, the pastor stated that he did not see Abioye in the church, leading to his subsequent arrest and detention at the Dugbe Police Station.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that Abioye had a history of stealing phones. He admitted to stealing and selling more than 18 phones from various locations across the state.

The Osun Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, stated that the suspect would be charged in court once the investigation is concluded.
