Plane In Nepal Makes Emergency Landing After Indication Of Fire In Engine

According to officials, a Shree Airlines Dash 8 turboprop successfully executed an emergency landing in Nepal on Thursday after an “indication of fire” was detected in one of its engines.

The incident occurred in a country that has been on high alert over aviation safety since a fatal ATR 72 crash in January.

The Shree Airlines flight was on its scheduled route from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa in southwest Nepal, carrying 78 people, including the crew.

Shree Airlines spokesperson Anil Manandhar informed Reuters that “the pilot reported an indication of fire in the right engine and the plane was diverted to Kathmandu immediately.”

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) spokesperson, Jagannath Niroula, confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Kathmandu, and all passengers and crew were unharmed. Niroula added that there was no indication of fire upon landing.

Nepal, known for its mountainous terrain and sudden weather changes, has a history of frequent air crashes. In January, a Yeti Airlines ATR 72 plane carrying 72 people crashed in good weather before reaching its scheduled destination in the tourist town of Pokhara, 79 miles (125 km) west of Kathmandu.

So far, rescuers have recovered 71 bodies, with one person still presumed dead and missing.

According to a preliminary report, one of the pilots of the Yeti Airlines plane stated that there was no power from the aircraft’s engines before the crash.
