A family in New Zealand bought a suitcase from a storage facility auction – only to take it home and find human remains inside. Police in Manurewa, South Aukland, began investigating the incident as a homicide.

The police began investigating the incident, first reported by BBC News at the home on Aug. 11.

Police believe the homeowners discovered the remains after they brought the previously unowned property to their house, and they are not believed to be involved in the incident.

New Zealand police on Thursday, August 25, confirmed that the human remains found in the two suitcases bought at the Auckland auction were those of two primary school-aged children, and officers vowed to find those responsible.

Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said it’s likely the bodies were in storage for several years, adding that the victims are thought to have been between five and ten years old.

The children were concealed in two suitcases of similar size, he said.

“The nature of this discovery provides some complexities to the investigation, especially given the time lapsed between the time of death and the time of discovery,” Vaaelua added.

“A lot of us (in the police) are parents and we have a job to do and we’re doing our very best to identify the victims,”

“What I can say is we are making very good progress with DNA inquiries.

“The investigation team is working very hard to hold accountable the person or persons responsible for the death of these children.”

“This includes establishing where, when and how,” he stressed.

New Zealand authorities have now confirmed the identities of the two children whose remains were found stuffed inside the suitcases, but their names will not be made public at the request of their families, police said Friday.

A coroner has issued an order to not make public any evidence that could reveal the identities of the children, detective inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said.

On Monday, police in South Korea’s capital Seoul said they had located a woman believed to be related to the children.

Immigration records show that the unidentified woman in her 40s arrived in South Korea in 2018, but there has been no record of her departure since, said Park Seung-hoon, an official at the National Police Agency in Seoul.

The woman was born in South Korea and later moved to New Zealand where she gained citizenship. New Zealand police suspect the woman could be the mother of the children found dead, as her past address in New Zealand was registered to a storage unit where the suitcases were kept for years, according to Park.

Police have been checking hours of CCTV footage, but key moments could have already been erased due to the delay between when the victims died and the discovery of the bodies.

Both the storage unit and property where the suitcases were taken have been thoroughly examined by forensic experts.
