TOEFL Shortened By An Hour From July, Real-Time Updates On Score Status

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) will be undergoing a series of changes, according to the Educational Testing Services (ETS), the organization that conducts the TOEFL and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).

The changes will create an optimal experience for those taking the test and will be effective from July 26, 2023.

The most significant change is that the TOEFL test will now take less than two hours to complete, unlike the previous three hours. The test’s reading section will be shortened, and all unscored questions will be removed from the exam. Additionally, the “independent writing task” will be replaced by the “writing for an academic discussion.”

Another important change is that test-takers will be able to see their official score release date upon completion of the test, and they will receive real-time notification of any changes to their score status. These changes will benefit the thousands of students who take the TOEFL exam annually to fulfill language proficiency requirements for study abroad opportunities or scholarships.

Over 10,000 institutions widely accept TOEFL in more than 150 countries, including popular destinations like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Over 98% of universities in the UK also accept TOEFL scores.

According to Amit Sevak, the CEO of ETS, the registration process has been simplified. “A simplified registration process will be available beginning July 2023. Test-takers can create an account and register for an available TOEFL iBT test date quicker and easier than ever before,” he said.

The changes to the TOEFL exam have been developed through the lens of customers and stakeholders, and they further underscore the TOEFL’s position as an industry standard for nearly six decades. These updates will enhance the experience of test-takers and create more opportunities for those seeking to study abroad or receive scholarship opportunities.
