The United Kingdom is preparing to implement new restrictions that will likely prevent Nigerian students and students from other nationalities studying in the UK from bringing their families over.

This crackdown is expected to be announced this week, according to an exclusive report by The Sun UK.

Under the new rules, all master’s students and many other postgraduates will be banned from bringing their families. However, the ban will not apply to Ph.D. students, as their courses typically last between 3 and 5 years and require a high level of skill, as reported by the UK media house.

This move comes as net migration into the UK has reached 1 million, prompting calls from Tory MPs for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take action and control the increasing numbers. UK ministers are expected to announce the immigration clampdown on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Sun reports that Rishi Sunak is anticipated to address the issue of immigration, highlighting that the figures are inherited from the year ending December 2022, which is two months after he assumed office as Prime Minister.

The report further states, “There has been an explosion in the number of people coming to Britain piggybacking on their relative’s student visa. Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019. Last year, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives.”

A Tory MP expressed the need for stricter measures, stating, “We have got to get a grip.”

As the UK aims to address the growing numbers, these proposed restrictions on family migration are expected to be part of the government’s efforts to manage immigration more effectively.
