Brittney Griner, a Women’s National Basketball Association, WNBA star who was allegedly found with hard drugs and imprisoned by the authorities in Russia has been visited by US Embassy officials in Moscow.

Griner’s imprisonment has continued to attract the attention and intervention of the US state department which has entered into negotiations with Moscow to find ways to bring her home.

The United States government believes Griner is one among other wrongful detentions by the Russian authorities. Another case is that of Whelan.

Paul Whelan was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison in Russia on espionage-related charges that he and his family say are bogus.

Both of them have been described as “wrongful detainees” and the US government has been trying to negotiate with Russia for their release. The US government appeals for “fair treatment for every detained American.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said over the summer that the U.S. had made a “substantial proposal” to Russia to try to get both detainees home.

Eight months ago, Russia accused the WNBA star of being in possession of hard drugs. She was detained for having cannabis oil in her belongings at a Russian airport.

Her wife, Cherelle, while thanking President Joe Biden and his administration for working tirelessly in hopes of bringing her home has continued to call on the government to do everything in its power to bring her home.

“I’ve felt every moment of the grueling seven months without her,”

“I want to thank President Biden for the Administration’s efforts to secure her release,” Cherelle added.

“As my family and I continue on this journey, I would like to thank our friends, leaders, and supporters who continue to stand with us and advocate for Brittney’s swift and safe return.”
