The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is proud to announce the Georg Forster Research Awards for the year 2023.

These prestigious awards aim to recognize the outstanding contributions of internationally acclaimed researchers from developing and transition countries.

Named in honor of the renowned German ethnologist Georg Forster (1754–1794), the award is generously funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Eligibility and Nomination

This award seeks nominations from established researchers at renowned research institutions in Germany. In a unique opportunity, Humboldt Foundation award winners working abroad can also initiate nominations in collaboration with researchers based in Germany.

The nominated researchers must have made fundamental discoveries, formulated new theories, or achieved breakthrough findings with a lasting impact beyond their immediate research area.

Moreover, they should demonstrate a commitment to advancing research-based solutions to the challenges faced by developing and emerging countries.

To qualify, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Internationally recognized academic achievements with proven success in research.
  • No previous receipt of an award from the Humboldt Foundation for their academic work.
  • Citizenship of a developing or transition country (excluding PR China and India, see list of countries (PDF)). The nominee must have lived and worked in one of these countries for a minimum of five years at the time of nomination.

Award Details

Each selected researcher will receive a grant of €60,000 as part of the Georg Forster Research Award. Additionally, the awardees will have the opportunity to conduct a research project of their choice in collaboration with specialized colleagues at a research institution in Germany.

The award facilitates a total stay of up to one year, which can be split into multiple periods.

Furthermore, recipients may receive supplementary funding of up to €25,000 to support academic collaborations, including costs related to attending academic conferences, acquiring specialist literature or scientific equipment for their home institution, or funding research involving junior researchers.

Application and Selection Process

The nomination period will remain open until October 31, 2023. A committee comprising researchers from various disciplines will meet during the following year to evaluate the nominees and select the award winners.

The committee’s decision will be based on independent peer reviews, the nominees’ academic achievements, and the significance of their research contributions to the development of their home country.
