Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, now known as X, has stepped down from the board of Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform that he helped co-found.

This announcement comes as Bluesky, an alternative to Twitter/X, achieved a milestone of two million users in November last year.

Bluesky, in a statement, expressed its gratitude to Jack Dorsey for his invaluable contribution in funding and initiating the project. The company is now actively seeking a new board member to fill the vacancy left by Dorsey’s departure.

“With Jack’s departure, we are searching for a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit company who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience,” Bluesky stated on its platform.

Dorsey-backed Bluesky has been gaining traction as a decentralized social network, operating on ‘atproto’, the protocol developed by the company. Its success has been underscored by the recent milestone achievement and the continued development of features such as mobile push notifications, user lists, email verification, and advanced feed and thread preferences.

The confirmation of Dorsey’s departure came in response to an inquiry from an X user, to which Dorsey replied with a straightforward “no”. This development marks a significant shift in the leadership of Bluesky, which had previously received investments totaling $8 million last year and secured $13 million in funding in 2022, with Dorsey joining its board.

Bluesky’s journey continues as it remains committed to its vision of providing users with a social networking platform that prioritizes user control and autonomy.
