Kenya: A shocking tragedy has struck Kenya’s coastal Kilifi county, where four people believed to be part of a controversial cult have been found dead, and nearly a dozen others have been hospitalized after being instructed by their preacher to starve themselves in order to “meet Jesus”.

According to Newsweek, the group of worshippers belonging to the Good News International Church, led by Makenzie Nthenge, went without food or water for several days in a forest near Shakahola village in Magarini Constituency.

The police found the group after receiving a tip-off about the purported prayer session, but unfortunately, only 11 of the 15 participants who were found alive made it to the hospital.

Authorities suspect that there may be a mass grave in the forest where other cult members are buried and that the group had been brainwashed by Nthenge, who allegedly advised his followers to fast to enter heaven more quickly and avoid “apocalyptic damnation”.

This isn’t the first time Nthenge has come under scrutiny for his actions. Last month, he was charged over the death of two children whose parents are among his followers. He allegedly buried the babies in a shallow grave after telling their parents it would make them “heroes”.

As of now, Nthenge is out on police bail, and authorities are investigating the situation further. It’s a tragic reminder of the dangerous consequences that can arise from religious fanaticism, and our thoughts go out to the families affected by this heartbreaking incident.
