Chinese Influencer Dies After Binge-Drinking Alcohol in Viral Challenge

In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old Chinese influencer named Zhong Yuan Huang Ge passed away after participating in a viral drinking challenge that involved excessive alcohol consumption.

The influencer, known as Brother Huang to his 176,000 social media followers, gained popularity through his live-streaming activities. This news comes just days after another 34-year-old influencer also died in a similar fashion.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Huang’s wife in a statement to the local media outlet Jimu News. According to her, Huang died on June 2 after binging on Baijiu, a potent Chinese spirit, during the viral drinking challenge.

Baijiu typically has an alcohol content ranging from 30% to 60%. Disturbing videos emerged, showing Huang downing Baijiu and even lighting tissue paper soaked in alcohol. Another video displayed a stack of dozens of bottles, highlighting the dangerous nature of the challenge.

Huang’s wife surnamed Li, revealed that her husband was desperately trying to earn money through live-streaming to repay debts he had incurred before their marriage. She expressed her deep sorrow and stated that she would work for the rest of her life to repay her husband’s debts, as they had recently built a new house and planned to renovate it after sending their son to kindergarten this year.

The account used by Huang to post short videos has been banned since the incident, as confirmed by his wife in an interview with Jimu News.

This unfortunate incident follows the death of another live streamer named Wang, who was found dead on May 16 after consuming at least seven bottles of Baijiu during a Douyin broadcast, China’s version of TikTok.

Wang’s death, along with Huang’s, has raised significant concerns about the safety and regulations surrounding such apps and the impact they have on individuals.

It was reported that Huang and Wang were good friends, and Huang had attended Wang’s funeral, where he pledged to consume less alcohol. Sadly, he was unable to keep his promise, resulting in his own tragic demise.

These incidents have prompted a broader discussion on the safety measures and regulations governing social media platforms and the potential risks associated with viral challenges. The spotlight is now on the responsibility of these platforms to ensure the well-being and safety of their users.
