Berlin, Germany, October 24, 2023 – Tragedy struck in the North Sea as two cargo ships collided, leaving several individuals missing.

German authorities confirmed that one of the vessels is believed to have sunk in the aftermath of the collision.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) southwest of the island of Helgoland, according to the German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with several ships actively searching the area for survivors. One fortunate individual has been rescued from the water and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The vessel thought to have sunk has been identified as the Verity, sailing under the British flag and en route from Bremen to the British town of Immingham. In contrast, the other cargo ship involved is the Polesie, flying the Bahamas flag and heading from Hamburg to La Coruna in Spain.

Notably, the Verity is a smaller vessel with a length of 91 meters (almost 300 feet), while the Polesie is significantly larger, measuring 190 meters.

The agency reported that the Polesie remains afloat, with 22 individuals on board, raising hopes for their safety and rescue.

Multiple rescue teams, including two rescue cruisers, an emergency tug, a pilot boat, a police patrol boat, and a helicopter, have joined the search efforts.

The incident has also seen the involvement of a cruise ship that happened to be in the vicinity, further intensifying the search and rescue operations.

As the search continues, authorities are focused on locating and ensuring the safety of all individuals affected by this tragic maritime collision.
