French Woman Shocked as Stomach Pain Reveals Unusual Ectopic Pregnancy - Baby Grows in Bowel

A 37-year-old French woman experienced an unexpected revelation when severe abdominal pain led her to discover she was unknowingly 23 weeks pregnant, with the baby growing inside her bowel.

The surprising case, detailed in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlights a rare phenomenon known as abdominal ectopic pregnancy.

The woman sought medical attention after enduring ten days of intense abdominal pain and worsening bloating. A scan conducted by medical experts revealed the presence of a “normally formed” fetus inside her abdominal cavity, situated between the stomach and the bowel.

Abdominal ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, specifically in the abdominal cavity. This condition often results in the loss of the child, but in this extraordinary case, doctors in France successfully delivered the baby at 29 weeks. Remarkably, within three months, both the mother and the newborn were discharged from the hospital.

The doctors’ success is particularly notable given the potential dangers associated with ectopic pregnancies, including internal bleeding, tube rupture, or shock. Ectopic pregnancies can also lead to fetal death, with a high likelihood of up to 90% in some cases. Survivors face a one in five chance of experiencing birth defects or brain damage.

In this instance, the woman received prompt medical attention in France, where doctors waited until 29 weeks of gestation to maximize the baby’s chances of survival. Employing their expertise, medical professionals made an incision in the woman’s abdomen and successfully delivered the baby, placing it in neonatal intensive care.

This case adds to a collection of rare occurrences where embryos have been found growing in unexpected locations.

In a separate instance, a doctor shared a case report of a fetus growing in a woman’s liver, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of such occurrences in the medical field.
