New Delhi, October 27, 2023 – Israel faces a formidable challenge in dealing with the extensive tunnel network employed by Hamas, and to combat this, a remarkable innovation known as “sponge bombs” has emerged.

The situation has escalated with 21 days of relentless fighting in Gaza after a surprise cross-border attack by Palestinian group Hamas, resulting in the tragic loss of around 1,400 lives.

Following the attack that commenced on October 7, Israel has relentlessly bombarded Gaza, resulting in the unfortunate demise of over 7,000 Palestinians.

The Israeli military has taken the bold step of launching a deeper incursion into Gaza, preparing for an impending ground offensive against Hamas. Amidst these operations, the Israeli troops encounter a significant obstacle – the extensive Hamas tunnel network, where the group is rumored to have taken numerous hostages.

These tunnels, varying in length from hundreds of kilometers to depths of up to 80 meters, snake beneath the 360-square-kilometer coastal strip and its adjoining borders.

Dealing with this underground network presents a complex challenge that necessitates unconventional solutions.

The innovative answer to this problem is the development of “sponge bombs.” These unique munitions cause an explosion of foam, rapidly expanding and hardening, sealing tunnel entrances or gaps where Hamas operatives might emerge.

These sponge bombs are non-explosive, making them a safer option for dealing with these underground threats. They are securely encased within a protective plastic container, featuring a metal barrier that separates two distinct liquids. Upon activation, these two liquids merge and advance toward their intended destination.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have already been seen deploying these sponge bombs during exercises within a mock tunnel system near the Gaza border in 2021. Such innovative weaponry is crucial in neutralizing the underground threat posed by Hamas.

Heading the mission underground are the elite units of the Yahalom, specialist commandos from Israel’s Combat Engineering Corps, often referred to as the “weasels.” Their expertise lies in locating, clearing, and ultimately destroying the complex network of tunnels employed by Hamas.

Hamas initiated tunneling activities in the mid-1990s, growing an extensive network. The tunnel network has played a pivotal role in strengthening Hamas’ presence in Gaza compared to the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

One pivotal turning point was in 2005 when Israel withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza.

In addition, the 2006 election victory by Hamas solidified their control and provided further opportunities for expanding this network.

As the conflict persists, Israel continues to innovate and adapt to confront the evolving tactics and strategies employed by groups like Hamas, ensuring the safety of its citizens and the stability of the region.
