A tragic yet poignant discovery was made in the Swiss Alps when a melting glacier revealed the remains of a mountain climber who had been missing for an astonishing 37 years.

The heart-rending find occurred on July 12 when climbers were hiking along the Theodul Glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland, as reported by the BBC.

The discovered remains were promptly sent to the forensic medicine unit at Valais Hospital in the nearby town of Sion for further examination.

Through meticulous DNA analysis, it was eventually confirmed that the remains belonged to a 38-year-old German climber who had gone missing on the same mountain in September 1986.

The climber had been reported missing after failing to return from a hike, marking the beginning of a decades-long mystery.

Swiss police authorities, while disclosing the successful identification of the climber, did not divulge additional details about the individual’s identity or the circumstances surrounding their demise. However, they released an image of a long hiking boot and crampons, which were unearthed from the ice, belonging to the long-lost mountaineer.

The Theodul Glacier, like many glaciers across the Alps, has witnessed a significant retreat in recent years, revealing hidden secrets from the past.

This incident is not the first of its kind in the region. Last year, the wreckage of a plane that had crashed in 1968 was exposed from the Aletsch glacier. In 2015, the remains of two young Japanese climbers who had gone missing in a 1970 snowstorm on the Matterhorn were found, with their identities confirmed through DNA testing of their relatives. In 2014, a helicopter pilot stumbled upon the body of British climber Jonathan Conville, who had been missing since 1979 on the Matterhorn.
