Israeli Doctors Perform Miracle Surgery: Reattach Boy’s Head After Car Accident.
In a remarkable medical feat, Israeli doctors have successfully reattached the head of a 12-year-old boy who was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.
The surgery, hailed as a miracle, took place at Hadassah Medical Center in Israel, as reported by The Times of Israel.
The young boy, Suleiman Hassan, suffered from an “internal decapitation,” a condition where the skull becomes detached from the top vertebrae of the spine. This rare and severe injury, scientifically known as a bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation, posed an enormous challenge for the medical team.
After the accident, Hassan was immediately airlifted to Hadassah Medical Center for emergency surgery. The doctors discovered that his head was almost completely detached from the base of his neck, making the procedure even more complex and delicate.
Dr. Ohad Einav, the orthopedic surgeon who led the treatment, described the procedure as involving several hours of meticulous work. The surgical team utilized innovative technology and placed new plates and fixations in the damaged area to stabilize the boy’s head.
“Our ability to save the child was thanks to our knowledge and the most advanced techniques available in the operating room,” Dr. Einav stated. He emphasized that the team fought tirelessly for the boy’s life, considering his chances of survival were only 50 percent.
While the surgery took place last month, the hospital kept the results under wraps until now. Hassan has recently been discharged from the hospital, wearing a cervical splint, and his progress will continue to be closely monitored.
Dr. Einav expressed his astonishment at Hassan’s recovery, noting that the absence of neurological deficits, sensory impairments, or motor dysfunction is truly remarkable. He praised the boy’s ability to function normally and walk unassisted after such a challenging ordeal.
Reattaching a head in such a manner is an exceedingly rare procedure that requires highly specialized expertise. Dr. Einav emphasized that the size of a child’s head compared to that of an adult makes them more vulnerable to such injuries.
“This is an extremely uncommon surgery, particularly for children and teenagers. It demands extensive knowledge and experience,” he explained.
The boy’s father stood by his son’s side throughout the entire ordeal and expressed profound gratitude to the hospital staff for saving his only child.
“Thanks to you, he regained his life even against the odds and obvious danger. It was professionalism, technology, and quick decision-making by the trauma and orthopedics team that saved him. All I can say is a big thank you,” he conveyed to the medical staff.
