Washington – In an unexpected move, former US President Donald Trump has reportedly extended an offer to serve as the temporary Speaker of the House of Representatives, as reported by various US media outlets.

This development comes on the heels of the recent removal of Republican Kevin McCarthy from the position of Speaker.

McCarthy’s ousting was the result of an unprecedented revolt within his own party, led by the far-right faction. They accused McCarthy of breaking numerous promises and expressed dissatisfaction with his willingness to cooperate with Democrats.

In an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump stated, “I have been approached to play a role as a unifying force, owing to my many friendships within Congress. In the event they encounter difficulties securing the required votes, they have inquired whether I would be willing to step into the role of Speaker temporarily, given my presidential candidacy.”

However, former Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock countered Trump’s proposal on CNN, citing House rules that prohibit individuals facing criminal charges from assuming House leadership positions.

Comstock remarked, “Regrettably, he [Trump] appears to be unaware of the House rules, which explicitly state that individuals under indictment are ineligible for House leadership roles.”

Donald Trump, currently the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is slated to stand trial in Washington in March 2024. He faces charges related to an alleged conspiracy to undermine the results of the November 2020 election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

In addition to the charges linked to the 2020 election, Trump is also confronting racketeering charges in Georgia. These charges allege that he conspired to overturn election results in that state.

Furthermore, a trial is scheduled for Trump in Florida in May 2024, focusing on accusations of mishandling classified government documents.

Additionally, Trump and his two eldest sons are currently embroiled in a civil fraud trial in New York. This legal battle centers on allegations that they inflated the value of their real estate holdings to secure more favorable bank loans and insurance terms.
