In the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israeli fighter jets launched a targeted strike on the Islamic University in Gaza City, resulting in severe damage, according to reports from an AFP correspondent and a Hamas-affiliated university official.

Ahmed Orabi, representing the university’s administration, provided details on the extent of the damage, describing the attack as intense and devastating.

Mr. Orabi stated, “The intense air strikes destroyed completely some buildings of the Islamic University.” The scale of the destruction is such that the university campus is inaccessible due to fires, debris, and rubble strewn across the surrounding roads.

Thick plumes of dust and smoke billowed into the sky as the targeted buildings crumbled, an AFP correspondent at the scene reported.

The Israeli military has initiated a large-scale aerial campaign against Hamas, the Islamist governing authority in Gaza. This significant escalation followed a surprise cross-border assault by Hamas fighters on Saturday, which resulted in a violent and deadly incursion into Israeli communities near the border.

As the conflict unfolds, the toll on human lives continues to rise. To date, the fighting has resulted in at least 1,200 casualties in Israel and over 900 in Gaza.

The international community closely monitors the situation, and efforts to mediate and de-escalate the crisis are ongoing.
