Abuja Sex Therapist Charged with N275m Internet Scam, Arraigned in Lagos.

Lagos, Nigeria – On Tuesday, an Abuja-based sex therapist, Cecilia Agu, aged 40, was brought before a Federal High Court in Lagos State by the police, following allegations of a N275 million internet scam.
Agu is facing five charges, including conspiracy, forgery, fraud, and obtaining money under false pretenses.
According to the police prosecutor, Samuel Eredia, the defendant, along with others who are still at large, committed the offense on February 20, 2023, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.
Eredia explained that Agu defrauded Babatunde Oyebode of N275 million by sending him an electronic message, falsely presenting herself as capable of verifying, validating, and authenticating his Instagram page with celebrities and other clients. However, she failed to deliver on her promise.
During the court proceedings, Agu pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against her.
In response, the prosecutor requested that the court remand the defendant in a correctional center. However, the defendant’s counsel, Elvis Asia, informed the court of his intention to request bail on behalf of his client.
Subsequently, Justice Daniel Osiagor granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N10 million, with two sureties required to provide a similar amount. Additional conditions were also set by the judge.
As the defendant was unable to fulfill the bail conditions immediately, she was remanded in the correctional center until her requirements are met.
The trial is scheduled to commence on October 18, 2023.
