British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dismissed Interior Minister Suella Braverman as part of a broader reshuffle following her criticism of the police’s handling of a pro-Palestinian march.
The decision came after mounting pressure from both opposition lawmakers and within Sunak’s own Conservative Party to remove Braverman, who had recently published an article challenging the police’s approach to protests.
In a statement released by a government source, Sunak requested Braverman to “leave government,” and she accepted the decision.
The Sun tabloid’s political editor reported that Foreign Secretary James Cleverly would step in as her replacement.
As the ministerial reshuffle unfolded, former Prime Minister David Cameron was spotted entering Downing Street, sparking speculation about a potential return to government.
Braverman’s recent article, which accused the police of “double standards” in handling protests, drew criticism from various quarters, including the opposition Labour Party, who argued that it fueled tensions during a pro-Palestinian demonstration. The event resulted in over 140 arrests as far-right counter-protesters clashed with police, attempting to disrupt the 300,000-strong pro-Palestinian march.
Rishi Sunak’s cabinet reshuffle is anticipated to involve broader changes, with allies expected to be brought in and ministers perceived as underperforming potentially being replaced. This move comes amidst a challenging week for Sunak as the UK Prime Minister.
