Hungarian PM, Viktor Orbán Says Only Trump Can End Ukraine War.

• Orbán suggests that the United States’ continual support to Ukraine in terms of money and weapons has made them a party o the war in Ukraine.

Hungarian prime minister has said that former Us president Donal Trump is the only United States leader who can end the Ukraine war and called for direct talks between US and Russia on resolving the conflict.

The prime minister made this known at a panel discussion in Berlin on Tuesday where he said ‘hope for peace’ in Ukraine ‘goes by the name of Donald Trump’.

During the panel discussion, Orbán accused US president Joe Biden of having gone too far by calling Russian president Vladimir Putin a war criminal and saying in March that he “cannot remain in power”.

“That would make it very hard for [Biden] to make peace,”

“This is going to sound brutal, but hope for peace goes by the name of Donald Trump,” Orbán said.

Orbán is considered by other European Union states as a close ally of Russian President Putin. This is also because he has shied away from harshly attacking Russia as he does other western leaders.

Orbán, who was in Berlin for talks with Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, criticized the EU Commission’s sanctions policy although he has consistently voted with the rest of the EU on sanctions.

Meanwhile, Orbán has dismissed suggestions that he was more on Russia’s side in the war than on Ukraine’s, saying Russia’s invasion was an “act of aggression” and a clear breach of international law.

However, he said the international community had failed to “isolate’ the conflict, as it did in 2014 when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea. He attributed that success to the political dexterity of former German chancellor Angela Merkel. He praised Merkel’s diplomacy at the time as a “masterstroke”.

When asked whether Angela Merkel may have prevented Russia’s war with Ukraine if she were still chancellor, Orban quickly replied: “sure”.

In his estimation of the conflict, Orbán suggests that the United States’ continual support to Ukraine in terms of money and weapons has made them a party o the war in Ukraine. Therefore, the war would continue and the only way to end the war is through direct negotiations between Russia and the US, instead of between Russia and Ukraine.
