Mother of 6-Year-Old US Boy Charged with Federal Crimes After Teacher Shooting.
In a shocking incident that shook the nation earlier this year, the mother of a six-year-old boy in the United States, who shot his teacher, has been charged with federal gun crimes.
Deja Taylor, the mother, now faces serious legal consequences for her role in the tragic event that unfolded in a Virginia school. The incident sparked concerns about school safety and the responsibility of parents in securing firearms.
The incident occurred in January when the young boy brought a handgun to his school in Virginia and opened fire in the classroom, resulting in serious injuries to the teacher.
The boy was immediately taken into custody following the incident. According to NBC News, Deja Taylor, the mother of the child, was indicted in April by a grand jury on charges of child neglect and recklessly leaving a loaded firearm within reach of a child, endangering their safety.
On Monday, a District Court in Virginia brought forth two additional charges against Ms. Taylor. She is now facing counts of being an unlawful user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm and making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm. These charges indicate the severity of the situation and the potential legal consequences she may face.
In a statement, Ms. Taylor expressed her sincere apologies to the injured teacher, acknowledging her responsibility for her son’s access to the handgun. However, she remained unsure about how the boy gained access to the firearm in the first place, raising concerns about the security measures in place at their residence.
A trial is scheduled to begin on August 15, during which the court will further examine the details of the case and determine the appropriate course of action.
The injured teacher, Abigail Zwerner, demonstrated exceptional bravery by leading her class of approximately 20 students to safety despite sustaining gunshot wounds. She had previously filed a $40 million lawsuit against the authorities of Richneck Elementary School, accusing them of disregarding her warnings about the child’s possession of a gun and his troubling behavioral patterns.
In response to the lawsuit, the school has sought its dismissal, citing that the matter should be addressed as a worker’s compensation issue.
This alarming case has once again highlighted the urgent need to address school safety and the responsible storage of firearms.
