Philip Mathew, an Indian man in the US state of Florida has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife, Merin Joy, in 2020.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a hospital where Joy worked as a nurse. Mathew, who pleaded no contest to the first-degree murder, was spared a potential death sentence, as reported by The Sun Sentinel newspaper.

In 2020, Merin Joy, aged 26 and a dedicated nurse at Broward Health Coral Springs, tragically met her end. She was stabbed a shocking 17 times.

The gruesome details revealed that Mathew blocked her car with his vehicle, launched a vicious slashing attack, and then drove over her lifeless body on the ground before making his escape.

One of Joy’s co-workers described the horrifying scene, likening Mathew’s actions to driving over her “like she was a speed bump.”

In her final moments, Joy desperately cried out to her colleagues, repeatedly saying, “I have a baby.” She also managed to reveal her attacker’s identity to the police before succumbing to her injuries.

Mathew pleaded no contest to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The court swiftly sentenced him to life in state prison with no possibility of release. He also received a maximum of five years for the aggravated assault charge.

Paula McMahon, spokeswoman for the State Attorney’s Office said the decision to waive the death penalty was made in light of the certainty of the life sentence and Mathew’s agreement to forego his right to appeal.
