The Vatican’s doctrine department has revised its rules on Catholic baptism, extending eligibility to transgender individuals and infants born to same-sex couples.

Dated October 31, the new regulations are a response to inquiries submitted by Brazilian Bishop Giuseppe Negri, with detailed answers published on the Vatican’s official website.

The revisions reflect a significant change in the Church’s stance on sacraments concerning these marginalized groups.

The document stipulates that individuals identifying as transgender can undergo baptism like any other adults, provided there is no risk of causing scandal or disorientation to other Catholics.

Moreover, the ruling extends to children identifying as transgender, emphasizing that they can be baptized if well prepared and willing.

Additionally, the document permits transgender individuals, including those who have undergone gender reassignment procedures, to serve as godparents and witnesses in Catholic weddings under specific circumstances.

The inclusivity of the ruling also covers children born to same-sex couples, allowing their baptism under the condition that there is a well-founded hope that they will be educated in the Catholic religion.

This acknowledgment of diverse family structures reflects a progressive step within the Church.

However, the document maintains a firm stance on homosexuality, asserting that individuals in homosexual relationships are considered to be committing a sin. Baptism for such individuals is contingent upon repentance for these perceived sins, citing sermons by Pope Francis as supporting references.

Priests are urged to exercise “pastoral prudence” in deciding whether to allow the participation of transgender individuals, considering the value the ecclesial community confers on the roles of godparents and godmothers, their contribution to the community, and their adherence to the teachings of the Church.

Francis DeBernardo, the executive director of the New Ways Ministry, expressed optimism about the Vatican’s affirmation of transgender inclusion in the Church’s sacramental life. However, he cautioned that the ruling may not go far enough, urging church leaders to exercise pastoral prudence in its implementation.

DeBernardo warns against potential misuse, suggesting that the guidelines could inadvertently be used to establish exclusionary policies.
