Abuja, Nigeria: Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has taken possession of land properties owned by prominent figures, including Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, and Liyel Imoke, former Cross River governor and campaign director for Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election.

The announcement, published in national dailies and signed by Olusade Adesola, the Permanent Secretary of the FCT, reveals that 165 plots of land, including those belonging to Obi and Imoke, have had their certificates of occupancy revoked.

These properties are situated in various high-profile areas across the FCT, such as Asokoro, Idu, Katampe, Utako, Jabi, Wuye, Wuse II, Gudu, and Maitama.

Wike’s decision to cancel the owners’ rights to these lands is attributed to their failure to develop the properties, which is in violation of Section 28(5)(a) & (b) of the Land Use Act of 1978.

In addition to Obi and Imoke, several other notable Nigerians were affected, including the late Sam Nda-Isaiah, publisher of the Leadership daily; former Minister of National Planning, Udo Udoma; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ufot Ekaette; Niki Tobi, former Supreme Court Justice and Chairman of the 2005 National Conference; Kanu Agabi, former Attorney General of the Federation; Chidinma Chidoka; and Paul Nwabiukwu, media assistant to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the WTO.

Shortly after his inauguration, Wike issued stern warnings against individuals engaged in “land marketing” and cautioned that those who had received certificates of occupancy but failed to develop their properties would have their land rights revoked.
