World Password Day: Google Gives Major Update On "Passwordless Future"

Google has announced a significant step towards a “passwordless future” by introducing passkeys as an alternative to traditional passwords for signing in to apps and websites.

In a recent blog post, titled ‘The beginning of the end of the password’, Google explained that while passwords will continue to be used, they are often frustrating to remember and can put users at risk if they end up in the wrong hands.

Passkeys are an additional option for users to sign in to apps and sites, alongside passwords and 2-Step Verification.

Google has stated that it is rolling out support for passkeys across all its accounts on major platforms, making it easier for users to sign in securely without having to remember complex passwords. Users will be able to sign in to apps and sites in the same way they unlock their devices, with a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN. By the next World Password Day, Google believes that users might not even need their passwords.

World Password Day, celebrated annually on the first Thursday of May, serves as a timely reminder for all internet users to evaluate the strength and security of their passwords. Experts advise that using different passwords for different accounts, such as email, online banking, online shopping, and social media, can enhance security, as cybercriminals can access all accounts by cracking just one password.

Google’s announcement of passkeys as an alternative to traditional passwords is a significant step towards a more secure and convenient future for users. The move aligns with the industry’s efforts to develop simpler and safer alternatives to passwords, and it will be interesting to see how it develops over time.
