In a bizarre and shocking case, a man in the Netherlands has been banned from donating sperm after fathering at least 550 children.

The man, referred to only as Jonathan M due to Dutch privacy laws, had provided sperm to multiple fertility clinics in the Netherlands and Denmark, as well as individuals he met online.

However, the Hague District Court has now put a stop to his donations, stating that he had “deliberately lied” to his parents to persuade them to accept him as a donor.

National guidelines in the Netherlands permit sperm donors to father a maximum of 25 children with no more than 12 mothers. But it appears that Jonathan M had completely disregarded these guidelines, leading to concerns from the judge that the “huge kinship network” that he had created could have “negative psychosocial consequences” for the children involved.

The ban on Jonathan M donating any more sperm came after it was requested by the mother of one of the children he had helped to conceive, as well as The Donor Child Foundation, a group that represents other parents. The mother, identified only as Eva, expressed her hope that the ruling would lead to a ban on mass sperm donation and prevent others from experiencing similar “injustice”.

While Jonathan M may have had good intentions in wanting to help parents who couldn’t conceive, the scale of his actions has had significant and potentially harmful consequences for the children and families involved.
