Indian-American executive Ajay Banga has officially taken on the role of President of the World Bank, marking a historic moment as the first person of color to lead either of the two global financial institutions: the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

On May 3, the Executive Directors of the World Bank unanimously selected Banga, aged 63, for a five-year term as the 14th President of the organization.

In February, US President Joe Biden announced the nomination of Banga to head the World Bank. The appointment reflects the commitment to diversity and inclusivity within the leadership of these international institutions.

“Join us in welcoming Ajay Banga as the new President of the World Bank Group. We are committed to creating a world free from poverty on a livable planet,” tweeted the World Bank, accompanied by a photo of Banga entering the bank headquarters in Washington.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also congratulated Banga, stating in a tweet, “I wish Ajay Banga all the best as he takes up his new role as President of the World Bank today. I look forward to continuing the deep partnership between our institutions to do good and help those most in need.”

Banga’s appointment represents a significant milestone as he becomes the first-ever Indian-American to lead the World Bank, succeeding David Malpass, who announced his decision to step down in February.

Prior to assuming his new position, Banga served as Vice Chairman at General Atlantic and held the position of President and CEO at Mastercard, a global organization employing nearly 24,000 individuals. During his tenure at Mastercard, Banga spearheaded the launch of the Center for Inclusive Growth, which promotes equitable and sustainable economic growth and financial inclusion worldwide.

He also served as the Honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce and played a crucial role in various boards and initiatives focused on economic development and public service.

Banga’s diverse experience and leadership skills will be instrumental in guiding the World Bank during a period marked by significant global challenges and opportunities.

His presidency aligns with the World Bank’s ongoing efforts to collaborate closely with sister development banks, support the most vulnerable member countries facing multiple crises, and optimize the bank’s balance sheet by mobilizing private capital for global development objectives.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with Banga at the Treasury Department to discuss their shared vision for evolving multilateral development banks and reinforcing collaboration. Yellen emphasized the importance of supporting the world’s poorest member countries and expressed confidence in Banga’s leadership to navigate the current global landscape effectively.

As Ajay Banga assumes his role as President of the World Bank, expectations are high for his experienced guidance and management acumen to shape the future trajectory of this critical multilateral institution.
