Tragedy struck at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) as a promising student, Ms. Sanni Hameedat, reportedly took her own life after lending a substantial sum to a person she met on the popular social media platform, Snapchat.

Ms. Hameedat, aged 20, was undergoing her SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) program before this heart-wrenching incident unfolded.

The private hostel management, where she resided, disclosed in a statement that the cause of her death was unrelated to the pressure exerted by loan app agents who were urging her for swift repayment.

“The cause of the suicide was traced to financial misappropriation,” stated the hostel management.

Ms. Hameedat had been entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. It was during this time that she crossed paths with an individual on Snapchat, ultimately forming a friendship.

Tragedy befell her when the young man, claiming that his mother was battling breast cancer and required urgent financial assistance to the tune of N500,000, reached out to her. Out of compassion and emotional connection, Ms. Hameedat decided to assist by lending him half of the N1 million intended for her mother, with the young man promising to repay the borrowed sum.

However, things took a turn when Ms. Hameedat’s mother needed the money returned. The young man abruptly severed all contact, even going to the extent of blocking her.

Determined to find a solution to the missing N500,000. She decided to borrow money from various loan apps.

Ms. Hameedat managed to amass N450,000 from the loan apps and added her personal savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000.

Despite her efforts, the financial burden and emotional turmoil became unbearable. She ingested a bottle of the lethal pesticide known as Sniper.

Her roommate, who had retired to bed early, awoke in the middle of the night to discover Ms. Hameedat in extreme distress, foaming at the mouth and vomiting.

Deeply alarmed, the roommate immediately sought help, leading to her being rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). Unfortunately she not be saved, as she was declared dead.
